The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, much like the construction of many major bridges in history, was a bloody endeavor. 20 construction-related deaths were reported, including that of the visionary engineer who conducted the plans for the bridge, John Roebling. Soon after his son Washington, who was also an engineer, took over, he too fell ill and was left bedridden. And if it wasn't for his intelligent and determined wife, Emily Warren Roebling, the building of the bridge would likely never have been finished. |
