Despite not releasing a new album since 1993, Billy Joel still fills up stadiums. There is a good reason for that. The music he did release throughout his 50-year long career has gone to become iconic for many. Joel was born in the Bronx, NY in 1949. He was a gifted pianist since childhood, and he knew it. He dropped out of high school to pursue his music career. His first album Cold Spring Harbor didn’t do well, and the disappointed Joel left for Los Angeles and passed his time as a lounge piano player. Luckily for him and for us, a year later in 1972, the singer-songwriter got a second chance, and this time his talent was recognized.
It all did turn out to be for the best – Joel’s time as a lounge player inspired ‘Piano Man’, his first song that hit the Top 20, and granted him his industry breakthrough.
