American photographer Olivia Locher's project titled "I Fought the Law" comprises a collection of 50 photographs that purposely poke fun at absurd state laws in the United States. By intentionally taking a dig at these weird laws, Locher prompts viewers to contemplate the decision-making processes of local and state lawmakers and to question their subjective notions of decency and enforcement.
Initially showcased in Locher's solo exhibition at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York in 2017, alongside her monograph "Olivia Locher: I Fought the Law," the project highlights a range of peculiar and outdated laws, from historical curiosities to perplexing regulations. For instance, California prohibits riding bikes in swimming pools, while Kansas forbids serving wine in teacups. One such law from Alabama bans carrying an ice cream cone in your back pocket, originally enacted to deter horse thieves! Scroll on to take a look at the unbelievably bizarre laws that still exist in America.
