The Flower Festival of Campo Maior, Portugal

The renowned Festival of Flowers, also known as the Festival of People (Festas do Povo / Festas das Flores) has returned to the streets of Campo Maior, Portugal. This surreal festival last held four years ago, is organized by the local community, whereby local townsfolk hand-craft hundreds of thousands of paper flowers, which are used to decorate the town. The paper flowers are not simple floral-shapes. They are a lot more intricate, featuring flowers such as jasmine, tulips, roses, and orchids.

After looking at these photos and watching the video at the end, you’ll probably want to plan your next trip to Portugal to coincide with the next colorful festival.

Walking through the streets, festival goers will have a hard time imagining the place without the flower canopies. The town itself feels like a huge paper house, where you stroll through its rooms and corridors.

The most incredible fact about this festival is that the town’s residents (about 8,500), set everything up in just four months. They all cooperate with each other, skip meals and lose sleep to make sure that their town looks perfect for the festival.

Sadly, this is not an annual occasion, but rather a “spontanenous” one, and the residents decide if and when they’ll host the festival. It is, however, a spectacular example of community spirit, where all the residents work together to make their town look bright and colorful.
