Do you remember where you were when we landed on the moon? Did you get a chance to see it in real-time, or did you hear about it from other people's stories? One way or another, the moon landing and every other NASA mission for that matter, is a significant event in the collective memory of the world. As Armstrong put it, it was a leap for ALL mankind.
