Being able to read facial expressions and gestures is a crucial skill: according to some estimates, as much as 55% of the information (especially emotions) we pass on in a conversation is nonverbal. This makes reading faces essential not only for general understanding, but also for empathy. Personally, I think that estimate is too modest, at least judging by the vast amount of information my sister can transmit with just a raised eyebrow. The fact of the matter is, however, that by far not everyone is good at reading facial expressions, especially since a lot of these expressions are culture-bound. Test your ability to read faces and try to determine the emotions these people are experiencing. Surprisingly few people can actually manage to ace this seemingly-simple test.

Facial expressions are a mystery to you
It’s a challenge for you to guess other people’s emotions, at least from pictures alone. No worries, though, we know emotions can be confusing, especially when you’re limited to only visuals. Maybe, you’re among those people who rely more on the person’s intonation when trying to understand their mental state. It can also be the case that you simply had bad luck this time, why not try again?
Great job!
You’re in the happy middle. Like most people, you are pretty good at understanding the emotions hiding behind different facial expressions. At the same time, you need a bit more context to be able to understand and empathize with them, which is completely understandable. In the end, like most of us, you’re not a mind reader, but have an adequate sense of empathy and understand other people pretty well.
Your emotional intelligence is impressive!
Your emotional intelligence is impressive! So much so, we suspect you’re either a spy, or a parent, as both jobs require equal amounts of face-reading. Not only were you able to guess the overall mood of the person on the picture, but you also managed to spot the microexpressions, successfully navigating between the fine script of emotional hints. From the looks alone, you can always tell a person’s genuine feelings.
