Middle Eastern cuisine is one unlike any other. One of its most distinctive specialties is desserts, which are usually rich and nutty, rather than creamy and sugary sweet. Try your hand at a Baklava!
Method of preparing the Baklava:
-
Pulse the sugar and 1 cup of walnuts a few pulses in the food processor until coarsely chopped. Add the rest of the walnuts and continue pulsing, but don't pulverize.
-
Transfer everything to a bowl, add the spices, egg white and water and combine until you have a moist mash. Set aside.
-
Thaw the dough. Brush 7 sheets with oil and stack them on a lined baking pan. Preheat oven to 360°F.
-
Spread the filling evenly and cover with the rest of the sheets, making sure to brush each dough sheet well with the oil.
-
Cut into small bite-size squares and bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
-
In a small saucepan, heat the syrup ingredients over high flame. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
-
Let boil 5 minutes and then remove from heat and let cool. Drizzle and serve.
