The stromboli is a well-known Italian dish that migrated and settled in the United States. It can be described as a mix between a toast and a pizza of sorts, and it comes with all kinds of fillings. This time we chose a vegetarian filling but the cheese makes it a true delight.
Method of preparing the pastry:
-
Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet and grease it with olive oil.
-
Sauté the onion in a greased pan over medium-high heat. After 3 minutes add the garlic.
-
After a minute add the broccoli with 1/2 cup water, salt and pepper. Cover and cook for 5 minutes.
-
Remove the lid for another 2 minutes and then remove from heat. Transfer everything to abowl, add the basil.
-
Flour a surface and roll out the dough. Make it about 10-by-13 inches. Sprinkle half the cheese in the middle of the dough, leaving an inch border.
-
Over the cheese, layer the broccoli mix and then the remaining cheese. Fold the borders in and then roll the dough to create a flat cylinder.
-
Tighten and place on the prepared baking dish. Brush with olive oil, make 5 airing slits and bake 25-30 minutes.
-
Serve with the pasta sauce.
Chef's Tip:
For flavor, you can swap half the cheddar with a different cheese, such as parmesan.
