Mummy Sausages

The classic pigs-in-a-blanket recipe just got a spooky makeover and turned into mummy sausages. Needless to say, these fun treats are a spooktacular appetizer for a Halloween party, but you can make them all year and put a couple in your kid's lunchbox. You can also make these mummy sausages together with the little ones, they will enjoy wrapping the strips of dough around the sausages and creating the mummy's eyes.

If you're ever short on savory mummies, this jalapeño-mummies recipe will help.

Mummy Sausages
Ingredients for Mummy Sausages:
Hot dogs - 8 regular sized
Cream cheese - a few drops (for the eyes)
Whole cloves - 16 (for the eyes)
Ketchup - for dipping (optional)
Mustard - for dipping (optional)
Method of preparing the Mummy Sausages:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).
  2. Unwrap the can of crescent rolls and lay them out on a cutting board. Cut the dough into 4 rectangles using either a pizza cutter or a regular knife.
  3. Now cut each quarter into 1/8-inch wide strips lengthwise. Each quarter will give you around 10 strips.
  4. Wrap each hot dog in the strips of dough, leaving a little slit open at either end of the sausage (this will be the mummy's face).
  5. Arrange the mummies on a lined baking sheet, leaving a gap of at least 1 inch between each mummy sausage. Bake for around 15 minutes, or until the dough turns golden brown.
  6. Remove the mummies from the oven and let them rest on a wire rack until they can be handled. Then dip a toothpick in some cream cheese, and use it to create two dots on the sides of the mummy's face. These will be the mummy's eyes. Finish by sticking 1 whole clove in the middle of each cream cheese eye. These will be the pupils of the eye.
  7. Serve mummy sausages fresh with mustard and ketchup on the side.
Chef's Tip:
This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled - in case you're making these for a Halloween party.
