Being able to read facial expressions and gestures is a crucial skill: according to some estimates, as much as 55% of the information (especially emotions) we pass on in a conversation is nonverbal. This makes reading faces essential not only for general understanding, but also for empathy. Personally, I think that estimate is too modest, at least judging by the vast amount of information my sister can transmit with just a raised eyebrow. The fact of the matter is, however, that by far not everyone is good at reading facial expressions, especially since a lot of these expressions are culture-bound. Test your ability to read faces and try to determine the emotions these people are experiencing. Surprisingly few people can actually manage to ace this seemingly-simple test.
