17 Images That Reveal Indonesia's Secret Insect Kingdom

The dense forests of Indonesia hide countless treasures most of us will never see. Mofeed Abu Shalwa decided to change that. The Saudi scientific researcher and professional photographer packed his gear and ventured into some of the most remote parts of Indonesia, specifically the islands of Seram and Kalimantan. His mission? To document rare insects that few humans have ever laid eyes on.

This wasn't your typical nature photography trip - it involved four flights, a boat ride, and trekking through steep terrain with heavy equipment. The team pushed through poisonous plant encounters, torrential rains that damaged thousands of dollars worth of camera gear, and nights spent in open tents with cicadas providing the soundtrack. The result is a stunning collection of photographs featuring some of Earth's most elusive six-legged inhabitants.
