Early in 2014, Danny Cooke visited the town of Pripyat, Ukraine, as part of his job for CBS, on a piece about the Chernobyl disaster. During his free time, Danny used a drone to fly over the still-radioactive areas of the town of Pripyat, showing both the desolation and the beauty of nature’s reclamation. |

About the Chrnobyl Disaster: On April 26, 1986, near the small Ukrainian town of Pripyat, a relatively unknown Soviet power factory experienced a catastrophic accident. The explosion and subsequent release of radioactive particles turned the Chernobyl disaster into the worst nuclear accident in history, both in terms of casualties, as well as cost. Since that fateful day in April, the town of Pripyat, as well as the surrounding countryside has been abandoned due to high levels of radiation. While short visits are allowed, the area remains highly radioactive and uninhabitable. |
