In 2018, nearly 3.000 entries from 863 photographers competed to win the best landscape photographer award, and Canadian photographer Adam Gibbs was this year's honorary choice. Gibbs is an experiences landscape photographer, working in the industry since 1992, who managed to master a variety of styles during his extensive career.

Another key aspect of capturing the best possible shot is composition. Paul Marcellini, the winner of the best picture award captured the Floridian mangrove forests in perfect symmetry. The amazing contrast between the textured dark indigo tree barks and a burning red sunset reflected on the smooth surface of the water also helped create a truly impactful image.

At other times, what defines a stunning shot is its exotic and distant location, like this photo taken in the Gobi desert in Mongolia photographed by Ignacio Palacios. To capture this amazing photo, for example, the artist had to travel to one of the largest wastelands on Earth, infamous for its extreme weather conditions with rapid temperature changes and strong howling winds.

But let's discuss the competition itself a little more. From the pool of 3.000 pictures, judges had to pick 101 best images of the year (a selection of which we have displayed in this article). From these best photographs, they then had to choose 2 main prizes: the Photograph of the Year and the Photographer of the Year.

The former is the best single landscape image, and the latter required a set of 4 best images to deserve the title of the best photographer. And though we agree that Marcellini and Gibbs displayed exceptional skill and vision in their work, we can't help but ponder if the definition of an amazing photo lies in the eye of the beholder, as out personal favorite is the last image in this collection.
