Day 1 – Get to know Tbilisi

Unlike other European cities, you don’t need to wake up at sunrise to avoid crowds, as Tbilisi is not as packed and suffocating as many other destinations in Europe. Only recently have people begun to realize that it is indeed a place worth visiting. Here’s how to spend your first day:

1. Abanotubani Sulfur Baths

The name of the city in Georgian translates to "warm," referring to the natural sulfur springs that flow from the ground. Start your first day in the Bathhouse District – Abanotubani, at 8:30 AM. Even if you choose not to bathe, it’s worth seeing the structures inside and out, especially the Orbeliani Bathhouse, built in 1893, which resembles a mosque. On its facade is a quote by poet Pushkin: "In my entire life, I have not experienced a bath better and more exquisite than this."

2. Meidan Bazaar

After your visit to Abanotubani, head to Meidan Bazaar, a five-minute walk away. This underground market is packed with handmade crafts, wine, and souvenirs. It’s the perfect place to explore the city's artistic culture and pick up gifts for yourself or friends back home.

3. Gallery 27

This gallery is an eye-catching spot featuring beautiful carvings and a staircase adorned with colorful stained-glass windows. It opens at 11:00 AM, so you’ll arrive just in time after a five-minute walk from Meidan Bazaar. The gallery showcases local crafts and artwork and offers a cozy atmosphere that might make you want to linger.

4. Georgian Cuisine

By now, you’re probably hungry. Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Georgian cuisine features a unique fusion of flavors. If you’ve never tasted Georgian food before, you’re in for a treat. A must-try is khachapuri, a traditional dish made of boat-shaped dough filled with cheese, egg, and butter. You can find it in nearly every restaurant in the city, but don’t hesitate to try other dishes—they’re all delicious!

5. Holy Trinity Cathedral (Sameba)

The Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi, also known as "Sameba," is the main cathedral of the Georgian Orthodox Church and the seat of the Georgian patriarch. Completed in 2004, it stands 87 meters tall, making it the largest religious building in Georgia and the entire Caucasus region, and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.

You can see the cathedral's golden dome from almost anywhere in the city. It’s about a 10-15 minute taxi ride from Gallery 27, but you can also walk there to enjoy the scenery. It’s especially stunning at sunset. Entrance to the cathedral is free, but men must wear long pants, and women must cover their shoulders, head, and wear skirts, so come prepared.

6. Fabrika

End your evening at one of the city's most unique locations – Fabrika. Once a Soviet textile factory, it’s now a multi-functional space filled with hostels, cafes, bars, artist studios, and a lively nightlife area. It’s a popular spot among both locals and tourists and the perfect way to wrap up your first day in this amazing city.

Day 2 – Old and New in Tbilisi

The first day already gave you a good taste of the city's culture and sights. On the second day, you can continue at your own pace, starting at 8:30 AM, and explore more attractions that blend the old and new sides of Tbilisi.

7. The Clock Tower

Your first stop on the second day is the Clock Tower of Tbilisi, a leaning structure located on a side street in the Old Town. Originally part of a puppet theater, it now captures the attention of all visitors. Fun fact: it features both the largest and smallest clocks in the city. Every hour, a little angel appears and rings a bell.

8. Dry Bridge Flea Market

If you think you’ve bought enough souvenirs, think again! At the Dry Bridge Flea Market, you’ll find an eclectic array of jewelry, antiques, maps, clothing, vinyl records, and more. Open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, this outdoor market is set in a park, just a 10-minute walk from the Clock Tower. Don’t forget to haggle—the vendors expect it!
