Not all morning routines are created for the same purpose. Some routines that work wonders for certain types of people will end up getting others down. What do you want to get out of your day? Do you want to be more productive, be happier, or have better health? Start by figuring out what you really need, and move on from there.
2. Work out what you want to avoid
This might seem a bit counter-intuitive, but the next step is to create a list of things that you don't want to be doing. Think of all of the things that increase your chances of you failing to reach your goals, and train yourself to give them up. Align this list with your list of goals, and you'll already be on the right track.
3. Construct barriers
Now that you've got everything that you want to gain or avoid in mind, you should work on setting up barriers that'll help you keep on track.
A few good examples are:
• Placing your phone out of arm's reach, so that browsing social media sites at night will seem like a tricky task.
• Setting your phone to 'Do Not Disturb' so that constant notifications won't disrupt your morning.
• Setting a timer for answering emails, so that you won't keep constantly stressing about your inbox.
• Sleeping in your gym clothes to motivate you to exercise as soon as you wake up.
Chiropractors have discovered that getting out of bed without rolling over first risks straining your neck and back. They specifically recommend rolling over onto your right side, then pushing yourself up into a sitting position, before finally standing up with your back straight. This takes pressure off of your back, and will help you start your morning the right way.
8. Boost your mind immediately
One of the best things you can do for your brain in the morning is to drink a large glass of water. You should also take a few deep and controlled breaths. This is because our bodies are usually running low on oxygen in the morning, so drinking water and breathing deeply will help oxygenate your blood, which will clear your mind and help you focus.
9. Multitask your mornings
Depending on how much time you've got available, you should try and do as many positive things as possible at the start of each day, and multitasking will certainly make this a lot more manageable. Why not try meditating while gardening, listening to music while exercising, or even sipping on a nice cup of tea while writing your next journal entry?
10. Maintain your routine permanently
When planning a morning routine, it's important to ensure that you can also make it work on weekends. Setting your routine in stone for 7 days each week will allow you to get the most out of it, and to avoid slipping back into old habits. Routines can be a wonderful balance of work and play, as long as they're helping you to achieve your goals and reach your dreams.
