On This Day in 1888 the first of eleven unsolved brutal murders of women committed by ‘Jack the Ripper’ occurred in the Whitechapel area of London. In 1895 began the libel trial of Oscar Wilde, which lead to his eventual imprisonment on charges of ‘gross indecency’. And in 1973 the first ever portable cell phone was made in New York.
