The art of creating sculptures out of paper has its roots in ancient Egypt - where paper was invented. The ancient Egyptians used to make death-masks for their deceased pharaohs out of papyrus - an ancient form of paper, which was covered in plaster. The name “Paper Mache” (or Papier-mâché) comes from French and means “chewed paper”. The videos below are just some the works of Dan “The Monster Man” Reeder, who is considered to be one of the top paper mache artists today. You can see more of his work on his website: monster-man.com |

Dan says that the minimum you need to create paper mache sculptures (other than coffee, free time and a sense of humor) is:
To create the paste that will keep the whole thing together, mix the flour with water until you get a consistency similar to a creamy soup. Avoid using too much paste on the paper and cloth to prevent the development of mold.
